Turkey reported on Monday, March 30, 2026, that its air defenses intercepted a ballistic missile fired from Iran. According to the Turkish Defense Ministry, the incident occurred over NATO airspace and was handled by air and missile defense assets stationed in the Eastern Mediterranean.
The ministry initially provided no details on the missile’s trajectory, type, or intended target. It was described as the fourth such interception since March during the course of the war and Operation “Epic Fury,” which has now lasted more than a month.
The timing was described as notable because Ankara is simultaneously attempting to mediate between Washington and Tehran. Pakistan was also cited in this context as a partner of regional diplomats seeking to restart direct Tehran–Washington talks, an effort described as having so far proved difficult.
Turkish and NATO officials said that “all necessary measures” are being taken to counter threats to Turkish territory and airspace and that developments will be “closely monitored.” There has been speculation that Iranian ballistic missiles could be intended for U.S. and British military assets in Cyprus; earlier in the conflict, drones—likely from Iranian allies in Lebanon—were sent toward a British airbase on EU member Cyprus.
Repeated overflights of large Iranian missiles over Turkish territory have increased the potential for invoking NATO’s Article 5, even as U.S. officials have played down that option. Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth said after the first incident that officials were aware of the engagement but saw no indication it would trigger “anything like Article 5”.
