US President Donald Trump has extended the deadline for potential strikes on Iranian energy facilities by ten days until April 6, while simultaneously increasing pressure on Tehran to reopen the strategically important Strait of Hormuz. The decision was made on March 26 after Trump had previously postponed planned military strikes at short notice, citing ongoing diplomatic talks.
Earlier, Washington had issued a 48-hour ultimatum to Iran to reopen the strait or face attacks on its energy infrastructure. A few days later, Trump ordered an initial five-day pause on military action, referring to “productive” and “constructive” discussions between the two sides. According to the president, Tehran had requested more time, which ultimately led to the extension of the deadline.
Trump also stated that Iran had allowed eight oil tankers to pass through the Strait of Hormuz during the negotiations, which he viewed as a concession. Iran had originally requested seven days, after which he granted ten. At the same time, he emphasized that strikes on energy facilities would still be possible if cooperation did not materialize.
The timing of the decision coincided with major turbulence in financial markets. US stocks recorded their largest daily loss since the conflict began on February 28, while the price of Brent crude temporarily rose above $108 per barrel. Shortly after the announcement of the extension, markets partially stabilized and oil prices declined slightly.
Analysts see the delay as a factor prolonging uncertainty in the markets, as a clear decision on reopening the Strait of Hormuz remains pending. The waterway is a key route for global oil transport and remains largely blocked, adding further pressure to energy prices.
At the same time, indications are growing that the United States may be using the additional time for military preparations. Reports suggest that the Pentagon is considering deploying up to 10,000 additional troops to the Middle East, following preparations to send at least 1,000 soldiers from the 82nd Airborne Division.
Several possible military scenarios are being discussed, including the seizure of Iran’s Kharg Island as an economic hub, control of strategic islands near the Strait of Hormuz, and deeper incursions into Iranian territory to secure nuclear facilities. Meanwhile, Iran is strengthening its defenses by laying minefields along coasts and islands and expanding air defense systems and troop deployments.
