AfD federal co-leader Tino Chrupalla has spoken in favor of withdrawing U.S. troops from Germany. At a party congress in Saxony, he said that if the AfD comes to power, the first step should be to implement the party program calling for the removal of all allied forces from Germany and an end to NATO’s nuclear sharing arrangement. The proposal was met with loud applause in the hall.
Chrupalla also argued that Germany should not take part in international military operations and praised Spain for opposing the use of its bases for the U.S. conflict with Iran. He linked his criticism of American troops on German soil to his public rejection of Donald Trump’s decision to start a war against Iran. On the TV show “Markus Lanz,” he said he was “extremely disappointed” by Trump’s broken campaign promises and claimed the United States was close to having potentially triggered World War III with this war. He asserted that 70 percent of Americans did not want the war and did not support it.
Chrupalla further said the United States had been drawn into the war by Israel. He referred to negotiations in which Oman acted as a mediator and said Iran was bombed on the same day an agreement had been reached. He said the Omani foreign minister, the entire Arab world, and the foreign ministers of Norway and Turkey had described the attack as a mistake, warning of the risk of the conflict expanding.
In a recent speech, Chrupalla also addressed Russia’s war against Ukraine. He announced that the AfD would “bring about peace” and said that after the conflict ends, Ukrainians in Germany should return to their home country, while criticizing the current refugee benefits system. He said that “all Ukrainians” must go back.
Chrupalla also presented the AfD as a future governing party at both state and federal levels, saying at the party convention in Löbau that it must develop from an opposition party into a governing party. Germany’s next federal elections are scheduled for March 2029, and he said he aims for the AfD to have a minister-president in Saxony and an AfD chancellor leading Germany, adding that this would require further capacity-building and preparation of party structures for governing. According to a report by Bild, the party has already begun organizational preparations by setting up a special working group for participation in government.
