Iran has appointed Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr as the new head of the Supreme National Security Council after his predecessor, Ali Larijani, was killed in an air strike. Zolghadr is regarded as an influential security figure with extensive experience in the military, politics and judiciary. As a former commander of the Revolutionary Guard and a member of key power structures, he assumes a central role at a time of heightened external tensions and internal challenges.
The appointment comes against the backdrop of the ongoing war with the United States and Israel, as well as growing domestic instability. Air strikes continue to hit multiple regions of the country, while authorities are cracking down on alleged cooperation with foreign actors. At the same time, Iran is continuing its military operations, including missile attacks and efforts to disrupt shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, with noticeable global economic repercussions.
Zolghadr now faces the task of balancing external military pressure with internal security risks. His military background is seen by hardliners as an advantage in managing the current wartime situation. He is also expected to play a key role in any potential negotiations to end the conflict, as major security decisions will depend on his approval.
