The US Department of Defense is reportedly planning to deploy an additional 10,000 ground troops to the Middle East in connection with the ongoing war with Iran. The additional forces could include infantry units as well as armored vehicles and heavy equipment and are expected to be positioned within operational range of Iran without necessarily being deployed directly on Iranian territory. The move is intended to increase military pressure while strengthening the United States’ negotiating position. Final approval has not yet been granted, as the plans are part of a broader strategy to expand military options.
Approximately 7,000 US troops had already been deployed to the region, including around 5,000 Marines and about 2,000 paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne Division. With the newly discussed reinforcements, the total number of deployed US forces could rise to between 17,000 and 20,000 according to reports. Including the wider US military presence in Gulf states near Iran, the total could reach up to 50,000 personnel. At the same time, US President Donald Trump extended a previously announced five-day pause on strikes against Iran’s energy infrastructure until April 6.
The military buildup opens up various operational scenarios, including possible ground operations or the control of strategically important areas such as the Strait of Hormuz and Kharg Island, through which a large portion of Iran’s oil exports is transported. At the same time, the gradual US buildup gives Iran time to mobilize and prepare its own defenses.
According to reports, Iran has already mobilized more than one million troops to prepare for a potential ground offensive. This would mean that Iranian forces outnumber the estimated US troops by a significant margin. Iran also has extensive experience operating in the regional terrain and continues to possess active missile and drone capabilities.
US troops are currently being positioned in Gulf states, on aircraft carriers, and at forward operating bases in the region.
