EU Accuses Russia of Supporting Iranian Attacks and Warns of Further Escalation

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has accused Russia of providing Iran with intelligence that enables Tehran to carry out targeted attacks on US military facilities in West Asia. Moscow is also said to be supplying drones that Iran uses to strike neighboring countries as well as US bases. Since the United States and Israel launched military strikes on Iran, at least 13 US service members have been killed.

The remarks were made on the sidelines of a meeting of G7 foreign ministers south of Paris, which US Secretary of State Marco Rubio was also expected to attend. The conflict with Iran is likely to dominate the two-day talks. EU representatives view Russia’s support for Iran as an additional reason to maintain pressure on the Kremlin over the war in Ukraine. Kallas stressed that stopping Iran’s attacks on the United States also requires preventing Russia from continuing its support.

At the same time, criticism of the US strikes on Iran is growing in Europe, particularly against the backdrop of sharply rising global energy prices. German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius said that Germany is prepared to support peace efforts but warned that no clear exit strategy from the conflict is currently in sight. The war poses a significant risk of increasing instability in the region, which historically has had global repercussions.
